Practical Assignments

Welcome to the “Practical Assignments” section! This is your opportunity to put your spoken English skills into action. We’ll simulate common, everyday situations to help you build confidence and fluency. Remember, the goal is not perfection, but effective communication and learning from practice.

Each assignment is designed as a role-play. Find a partner (a friend, family member, or even practice speaking to yourself in front of a mirror!) and follow the instructions carefully. Focus on using the phrases you’ve learned, listening actively, and responding appropriately.

Practical Assignment: Ordering Food at a Cafe

Scenario: You are at a cafe and want to order a drink and a snack. The cafe is busy, and you need to get the attention of the barista and clearly state your order.

Your Goal: Successfully order one drink and one food item, pay for your order, and understand the total cost.

Key Phrases to Practice:

  • “Excuse me.” (To get attention)
  • “Hello, I’d like to order…” or “Can I get a…?”
  • “Could I also have a…?”
  • “How much is that?” or “What’s the total?”
  • “Thank you.”

Steps for Role-Play:

  1. Approach the Counter: Imagine you are walking up to the counter.
  2. Get Attention: Politely say “Excuse me” or make eye contact.
  3. Place Your Order: Clearly state your drink order (e.g., “I’d like a small coffee, please.”) and then your food order (e.g., “And a croissant, please.”).
  4. Listen for the Total: The barista will tell you the total cost. Try to understand the numbers.
  5. Pay: Respond with “Here you go” or “Thank you” as you pretend to pay.
  6. Confirm: If you didn’t understand the total, you can ask, “Could you repeat that, please?” or “How much did you say?”

Self-Reflection:

  • Did you speak clearly?
  • Did you understand the total cost?
  • Were you polite?

Practical Assignment: Asking for Directions in a City

Scenario: You are in an unfamiliar city and need to find the nearest bus stop to get to a specific location. You see someone who looks like a local and decide to ask them for help.

  • “I’m looking for the nearest bus stop.”
  • “How do I get to…?”
  • “Is it far from here?”
  • “Thank you very much!”

Steps for Role-Play:

  2. Get Attention & Be Polite: Start with “Excuse me, could you help me, please?”
  3. State Your Need: Clearly ask, “I’m looking for the nearest bus stop.” or “How do I get to the bus stop?”
  4. Listen to Directions: Your partner will give you directions (e.g., “Go straight, then turn left at the corner, it’s next to the big tree.”). Try to follow along.
  5. Confirm (Optional): You can try to repeat parts of the directions to confirm, e.g., “So, straight and then left?”
  6. Thank Them: End with a polite “Thank you very much!”
