TDS Payment / Remittance Process

Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) deducted by the Deductor needs to be deposited with the Government within the specified due date.

Under the Income-tax Act, 2025, the basic procedure for depositing TDS remains substantially similar. However, from 1 April 2026, the Income-tax Department’s e-Filing portal requires the deductor to select the applicable Income-tax Act and Tax Period while creating the challan.

The payment process broadly involves the following steps:

  1. Login & Navigate
  2. Select the applicable Income-tax Act and Tax Period
  3. Select Deductee Type and TDS Section/Table Code
  4. Enter TDS details and make payment
  5. Download and preserve Challan Receipt

Due Date for TDS Payment

  • For a regular non-government deductor, TDS is generally required to be deposited by the 7th day of the subsequent month.
  • For TDS deducted during March, the due date is generally 30 April for non-government deductors.
  • For certain transactions where a Challan-cum-Statement is required, such as specified PAN-based TDS transactions, a different due date applies.

What is a TDS Section / Table Code?Under the Income-tax Act, 1961, students were familiar with codes such as: – Payment of contractors and sub-contractors94H – Commission or brokerage94J – Fees for professional or technical servicesThese old codes should not be used for TDS transactions governed by the Income-tax Act, 2025.Under the Income-tax Act, 2025, TDS provisions relating to payments other than salary are consolidated under Section 393.The applicable TDS provision is identified through the relevant Table and Sl. No. under Section 393.The Income Tax Department has specifically cautioned that quoting an old section such as 194C instead of Section 393(1), Table 6(i) for a payment governed by the new Act may result in system-level validation errors in TDS return processing.
